Rainie wanted to scream as the discussion about her went on around her like she wasn’t even there. The man trying to lay claim to her didn’t look like he was going to back down, Keaton looked angry enough to jump him, and she knew that things were going from bad to worse very quickly. She wanted to make Keaton back down so she could explain that nothing short of death was going to stop her from going after Samuel, but he had her blocked and was ignoring her.

Alania stood between the two men, one hand on each of their chests, a look of worry on her face. “Malcom says that you have to prove that she’s yours,” she said. “I see no rings on your fingers.”

“We’re not married, but she’s mine,” he said, turning to look back at her, hoping she’d back him up.

She stared up at him. “I don’t belong to anyone,” she repeated. “I’m the Captain of the Alpine Guard.”

Keaton gave her a dirty look, wishing she’d just play along, then a smile spread across his face. “Ask him what we were doing when he found us,” he ordered.

Rainie couldn’t help but hiss when the words came out of his mouth. “Don’t ask him that,” she said, but it was too late; Alania had already translated.

The hunter took a step back, he looked down at the floor, then spat out a couple of words that sounded bad to her ears. Alania looked over at her, and she felt her face turning red. “I wouldn’t use the same words that Malcolm just used, but I gather you two were involved in something intimate when they found you.”

“That proves it,” Keaton said.

But Alania was already shaking her head before the sentence was even finished. “Only marriage would prove ownership of Rainie,” she said.

Keaton looked back at her. “Don’t even think about it,” she hissed at him.

He turned around and put his hands on her shoulders. “Do you want to stay here with him?” he asked. When she shook her head. “Then marry me. I think it’s the only way.”

Rainie could only stare at him; the idea was so ridiculous she couldn’t even formulate an answer as she searched for another solution. “You’ve got to be kidding. There has to be another way,” she said, beginning to panic. “I’m not a piece of property.”

“Rainie, I think it’s the only way; if you’d just stayed on the trail…” Alania said. “I can’t help you any more than this.”

It hit her then that this was all her fault, she’d known that they should stick to the trail, but she’d been so desperate for a break, she’d been willing to risk it. “I know, this is all my fault,” she said.

Keaton reached down and stroked her cheek. “It won’t be so bad being married to me for a little while, will it? We can have it annulled or whatever when we get back to Ballantine,” he said.

Disappointment washed over her and she wondered
